Join an exciting field study programme based in Limpopo, South Africa, and experience the world of African wildlife medicine and wildlife conservation.

 

Specifically tailored for veterinary professionals, the purpose of the programme is to provide an opportunity for practising veterinarians, qualified veterinary nurses, and certified veterinary technicians, to learn about, experience and participate in wildlife management and health interventions in free-roaming wildlife populations in Africa. This also forms the basis of understanding the spread and management of wildlife diseases.

Additional objectives are; giving the opportunity to learn and experience a different side of veterinary science that is unique to Africa, broaden your knowledge base, generate interest or a future career with wildlife, and of course, have the experience of a lifetime, and make some African dreams come true!

The programme was established over 20 years ago, and the team are experts in imparting veterinary education. We are excited to invite you to experience South Africa in a unique way, and make everlasting memories!

​

Take part in immobilization and relocation of a variety of species of African wildlife, learn about and assist with disease testing, and learn how to dart from a helicopter, on an extraordinary and exciting veterinary expedition.

 

As all participants are already qualified in the veterinary field, teaching is tailored to a higher level on this programme.

​

The programme mixes the right amount of fun, adrenaline-fuelled experiences, and both hand-on and lecture-based learning, to make sure you get the best out of your experience.

 

CREDITS AND PARTICIPANTS

​

The American Association of Veterinary State Boards RACE committee has reviewed and approved this programme as meeting the standards adopted by the AAVSB. The programme is also approved by the Australian Veterinary Nurses Counsel for CPA, and for CPD points in other countries.

​

The AAVSB RACE board has approved the programme to offer a maximum of 50 CE credits for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

THE PROGRAMME:

​

The programme does not have a fixed itinerary, as it is shaped by real-life situations, and the needs of wildlife at the time. However, key focus areas are always covered. The veterinary work on the programme is dynamic, staying flexible to address the most pressing needs of wildlife in the area, while ensuring the primary objectives are met.


Experiences and lectures always include the following topics:

​​

  • Talks, discussions, demonstrations and hands-on participation in actual game capture operations, for purposes of relocation, tagging, diagnostics, vaccination and disease or injury treatment.

  • Rhinoceros conservation and the role of veterinary science.

  • Elephant management and the role of the veterinarian in population control.

  • Priorities in and the handling of clinical wildlife veterinary cases.

  • Maintaining wildlife genetic integrity, and the functioning of the wildlife veterinary genetics laboratory.

  • Managing wildlife, and particularly the overpopulation of elephants in Kruger National Park.

  • Managing the vegetation ecology to the benefit of wildlife health in Kruger National Park.

  • Management of red line and enzootic area.

  • Diseases share by livestock and wildlife, and zoonotic diseases in the region.

  • Wildlife post mortem, and necropsy procedures when available.

  • Pharmacology of various capture drugs for wildlife.

  • Lectures and practical sessions on types of dartguns for different applications, darts, and propelling methods.

  • Wildlife conservation value of successful in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfers.

PRICING

15 DAY PROGRAMME

USD $4900 / GBP £3930

 

INCLUDED: All practical programme activities and lectures, lecture and course materials, accommodation, group airport transfers, food (three meals per day), professional guides, permits and entry fees to game reserves and facilities, in-country transportation during the programme, protective clothing (scrubs).

 

EXCLUDED: Flights, medical/travel insurance (mandatory), alcoholic beverages, any required vaccinations.

 

2025 DATES:

23rd March – 6th April 2025

24th August – 7th September 2025

28th September – 12th October 2025

 

Group Size: 14 participants maximum.

 

A 25% deposit is required to secure a booking.​

The balance of the trip is payable eight weeks prior to your arrival date.

​

FLIGHTS:

 

Flights to be booked to Johannesburg Airport, South Africa (JNB).

 

** You will need to land before 2pm on arrival day, and depart after 5pm on departure day. **

Please check carefully what date the programme starts and ends.

​

A representative will greet you from the airport, and take you to your programme.

The transfer time from the airport to the programme is just under one hour.
